Gustave Le Sénéchal de Kerdréoret fut un peintre de marines, paysages, et aquarelliste. Capitaine au long-cours, il s’initia à la peinture auprès de Jules Noël, Antoine Vollon et Pierre Auguste Cot. Il débuta au Salon de Paris en 1869, obtenant une médaille en 1883, puis en 1888, une médaille de bronze à l’Exposition Universelle de 1889 et une médaille d’argent à celle de 1890. Le Sénéchal fut nommé peintre officiel de la Marine en 1890 et fait Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur en 1900.
En 1898, son nom fut gravé sur l’épée d’Académicien d’Antoine Vollon parmi ceux des six autres personnes qui lui offrèrent son épée.
Le Sénéchal fréquenta assidûment Cancale et son port de pêche, d’où il ramènera pour le marché parisien des œuvres sensibles de pêcheurs, bisquines et sujets de la mer.
Les musées d’Abbeville, Strasbourg, Saint-Malo, Louviers, le Louvre à Paris, Evreux célèbrent aujourd’hui ses œuvres, en les exposant.

Dans notre tableau, le peintre traite ici avec hardiesse et une touche académique sensible, un sujet de cour de ferme: le charme d’une scène où chaque détail semble jouer de connivence, une jeune paysanne nourrissant ses poules dans un cadre champêtre et bucolique, animé par la rusticité des bâtiments. L’artiste crée ici une fort jolie ambiance, paisible et sincère, en s’éloignant de ses sujets habituels, bords de mer et marines.

Gustave Le Sénéchal de Kerdréoret was a marine and landscape artist, watercolorist as well. A long-course captain on the seas, he sketched and painted marine subjects. An art student of masters Jules Noël, Antoine Vollon and Pierre Auguste Cot, he started to exhibit at the Salon de Paris in 1869, winning medals in 1883, then 1888, a bronze medal at the Exposition Universelle in 1889 and a silver medal in 1890. Le Sénéchal became an official artist for the Marine Academy in 1890 and was named Knight of the Legion of Honor in 1900.
In 1898, his name was engraved on the sword of Academician Antoine Vollon, among six other names of donators.
Le Sénéchal frequently visited the fishing harbor of Cancale in Brittany, where he brought back studies and oils of boats and fishermen, and gained his reputation with sensitive artworks that he exhibited on the Parisian market.
Museums of Abbeville, Strasbourg, Evreux, Louviers, Saint-Malo and the Louvre in Paris are showing his artworks.
