Paul Émile Lecomte fut le fils du peintre Paul Lecomte, et baigna très jeune dans l’univers artistique familial. Il fut d’abord son élève, puis étudia avec le maître Cormon à l’Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Paris, avant d’être nommé peintre officiel au Ministère de la Marine. Il figura ainsi, à Paris, au Salon des Artistes Français dont il devint sociétaire en 1902, obtenant une médaille d’or.
Paul Emile Lecomte fut un peintre voyageur infatigable, visitant sans relâche la Normandie, la Bretagne et la côte Atlantique, La Rochelle et l’île d’Yeu, tous ces lieux de bord de mer qu’il chérissait tant. De ses haltes artistiques, on retient dans ses huiles et aquarelles un grand choix de marines et de scènes de plage, comme cette délicieuse aquarelle peinte dans l’entre-deux-guerres sur la plage de Solidor à Saint-Servan où il posait souvent son chevalet sur la côte d’Emeraude, à Dinard et à Saint-Malo. Guidée par des touches légères, cette scène attendrissante témoigne de la sérénité du moment, où de jeunes enfants semblent imiter leurs aînés navigateurs et s’adonnent aux premiers joies de la plaisance.

Paul Émile Lecomte was the son of the renowned Barbizon school artist Paul Lecomte, and was immersed very young in an artistic entourage. He was first his student, then studied with Cormon at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, before being titled peintre officiel de la Marine, official artist from the Marine Academy. He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français, which he became a society member in 1902 while obtaining a gold medal.
Paul Émile Lecomte was a tireless artist voyageur, visiting Normandie, Brittany and the Atlantic coast, La Rochelle and l’Ile d’Yeu, cherishing these places for his own inspiration.
From his artistic halts, we find today some lovely oils and watercolors, maritime landscapes and beach scenes, such as this delicious watercolor subject painted between the two wars in Saint-Servan on the Emerald coast near Dinard and Saint-Malo. Processing with light tones of colors, the artist depicts here a touching scene witnessing the serenity of the moment, when young children seem to imitate the navigating skills of their eldest by sailing their small pond yachts on the beach.
