Peintre de paysage et de marines, Charles Canet fut l’élève de Le Sénéchal de Kerdreoret et participa régulièrement au Salon des Artistes Français à Paris entre 1887 et 1900. Ses vues de port, marines et paysages ne cependant jamais au pittoresque et l’écriture de ce peintre est nerveuse.
Un effet de tempête, de ciel gris et de vent viennent habiter ce tableau, et ce petit panneau contrasté exprime bien, par l’imprécision des formes et l’opposition des ombres et des lumières, l’atmosphère de la côte bretonne. Un vol de mouette s’élevant à l’horizon et une voile justifient de la spontanéité du regard. La justesse du trait et la limpidité des couleurs s’unissent pour créer une lumière au large qui éclaire joliment le tableau et diffuse ses éclats vers une pêcheuse et des rochers.

As a landscape and a marine artist, Charles Canet was the student of the renowned artist Le Sénéchal de Kerdreoret, and showed regularly at the Salon des Artistes Français between 1887 and 1900. We can date our painting between these two dates as well.
A tempestuous, windy and grey sky are still living in our scene, and this small oil board all in contrast, expresses very well the Brittany coast atmosphere, with the imprecision of forms and the opposition between lights and shades. Seagulls flying in the horizon, and a sail in a far distance justify the spontaneity of the artist observation. The accuracy of the brush and the clarity of tones of colors unite together to create a light that irradiates the scene in the boldest way and diffuse all the way to the fishing lady and the rocks on the beach.
