Le petit pêcheur, Geneviève de BIGOT
The young fishing boy, Geneviève de BIGOT
Oil on canvas, signed lower left
Stamped in the back of its original frame with the etiquette of the Salon des Artistes in Nantes
This painting by Geneviève de Bigot subtly expresses the perception of youth through a charming and agile boy scene. It also bears witness to an already considerable level of professional skill in a lady artist proudly attending the Salon of 1898, among only a few artist women. Here, Bigot has closely observed the Impressionists. The light touch is particularly visible in the reflections in the river and the shadows of the trees cast in the foreground.
Bigot touches her canvas like the skin of a face, using her brush like she would paint a delicate tulle scarf. Posing in profile, lovely features can be seen on the face of the boy, his clothes and his hat. Such fine work and attention is particularly done on the boy’s hands fixing the fishing string, such a difficult skill to achieve in any artist’s work.
